“ความรู้” มีความหมายสองนัย นัยแรกเป็นความรู้ภายนอกทั่วไป (Explicit Knowledge) หมายถึงความรู้ที่ได้จาก การได้เห็น ได้ศึกษา ได้อ่าน ได้ฟัง หรืออาจกล่าวว่าเป็นความรู้จากการสัมผัสด้วยประสาทภายนอก นัยที่สองของความรู้ เป็นความรู้ที่ฝังแน่นในตน (Tacit Knowledge) ความรู้ชนิดนี้เป็นความรู้ที่สำคัญยิ่ง บุคคลในชาติที่เจริญทั้งหลาย สะสมความรู้ที่ฝังแน่นในตนไว้มาก เขาผ่านการเรียนรู้ ศึกษา ทดลอง หาความจริง ซ้ำๆ จนเชื่อถือได้ ความรู้ชนิดนี้นำมาพัฒนาชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของมนุษย์ให้ดียิ่งขึ้นได้
คนไทยก็มีความรู้ฝังแน่นในตน ที่เรียกว่าองค์ความรู้ของภูมิปัญญา เป็นความรู้ที่ทดลองทำ ค้นหาองค์ความรู้ที่ถูกต้องแม่นยำที่สุด ในการประกอบอาชีพ หรือจากสิ่งที่ทำที่ชอบ แต่คนไทยไม่นิยมถ่ายทอดความรู้อย่างกว้างขวาง จึงทำให้องค์ความรู้สูญหายไป เมื่อภูมิรู้ภูมิปัญญาคนนั้นเสียชีวิต
